My name is George Coghlan, I am 20 years old and am from
Mullingar Co. Westmeath. I live there with my parent’s brother and sister. I also
attended Glenstal Abbey School in Limerick. I am writing this proposal for my
Understanding the Image Module. I am currently studying an honours degree in
Film Studies in Dublin Business School and am in my first year. My proposal for
my photo book is one in which I am contrasting the chaos and noise of a big
city to the peace and tranquillity of the country side. The reason I decided to
choose this topic was based upon the fact that I am from a rural area and found
moving to such a big city a drastic change. My hobbies would also push me
towards the peace and quiet of the country side, sailing, fishing and golf to
name a few. The photos that I will be portraying will be to do with the streets
of Dublin contrasted to the country roads and lakes, along with the lack of
nature around Dublin city to the overwhelming amount anywhere you look in the
country side. The likes of temple bar and Grafton Street are perfect to show
off the overcrowded streets and litter, where-as the like of Lough Owel and
other lakes along with the streets of Mullingar and the surrounding villages
would reveal the calm, neat and tranquil side of the country. I would be taking
these photos from now until the deadline in March 2014. Then in the month of
April, 2014, they will be displayed in temple bar at a photography exhibition. I
have always been intrigued by the countryside, hence my proposal, but also the
people who live in it and how much they differ for those who live in cities and
never take time out of their hectic schedules to stop and enjoy the countryside.
I find that there is not enough fresh air and peace in Dublin and find it that
I get overwhelmed by the amount of noise in Dublin compared to home. And so why
I am happy i have gotten the chance to portray my point threw the art of
photography.
I will also, during my college breaks, be going around the streets of both Dublin and the Mullingar area talking to people on their thoughts of city and rural life asking them for their opinion on both to get a better mindset into the public view. I will also be using winter and spring to reveal the differences in my two subject areas at these times. Valuing my projects progress will come down to the different images i get and how well they contrast each other revealing the differences in the way of life of both the countryside and city but the people who live in these areas.
In conclusion I hope that my photo book will make people realise there is so much more out there than streets full of people and air full of fumes, and try to convince them to go out to the country more often and appreciate it as much as I do.
